#1 Candas Smith

5'6 Guard
Madison, Wi
1999-02

When Candas Smith took her official recruiting visit to the UW campus, she could have walked.  She played her high school basketball just up the street at Madison West High School.

Her career at Wisconsin started and ended on rough notes.  She was seriously injured in a car accident before her freshman year and was less than 100% physically for her first year.  After her junior season, she failed to show up for a summer school class she needed to stay academically eligible and was declared ineligible.

In between bad choices, her play was erratic.  She made too many ball handling errors and mental mistakes.  She was the most experienced point guard on the roster when she was declared ineligible, but it was unlikely that she would have been able to beat out freshman Ashley Josephson for that job.

Candas matured greatly during her time on the Badger roster.  Ultimately, not enough though.
